Vern Autrey: One of "The Original Wild Ones"
On the way to Hollister 1947 A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of once again sitting down and talking with "Original Wild One," Vern Autrey. We met out at Quaid's Harley-Davidson, about an hour's ride east of Los Angeles in the San Bernardino area. We had just pulled up in the parking lot when a young guy, an employee of the dealership, came out and shook our hands. He introduced himself as a friend and associate of the members of chapter 4 out in that area. I told him that his timing was perfect...in a few minutes one of the "originals" will be meeting us here. When Vern arrived he brought with him some old pictures...including one of himself, on his bike, heading for Hollister in '47. He also had his original embroidered green and white BFMC jersey! The associate of chapter 4 was treated to a lot of history in a short amount of time!
Vern, like all of the "originals," is a great guy and you could sit and listen to his tales for hours...which we did. But Vern seems to have just a bit of a "tougher edge" than some of the others...and I like that...I like that a lot. Even though he's aged a bit since '47, you get the impression that this guy is still as tough and as serious of a biker as they come. He's a true pioneer...a true legend.
Along with our other "originals," Vern is living proof that the power and pride of this club will remain immortal. -BILL HAYES
