SEPTEMBER PROFILE ED `UNDERDOG’ DUNSON Ed came roaring into this world April 24, 1944 in Cleburne, Texas. At age 13 he got an Allstate Scooter and started venturing all about the country side. `UNDERDOG’ say’s there were a lot of venturing to do and sights to see and he figured they sure as heck weren’t all in that little country town he lived in. As time continued on Ed progressed up to much larger bikes, ridding to much further away places.
Ed attended the UNIVERSITY of TEXAS at Arlington and took some special trade schools then pursued a career with General Motors. However “UNCLE SAM” decided on utilizing his talents in the Army during 1965.
While serving as General Gerard’s aid in Germany he managed to tour 6 or 7 other European countries. “I really enjoyed seeing how those other parts of the world ticked,” Ed said.
JQ asked---“so what does one do as a General’s aid? Did it require some kind of special skill, training, or talent?” “Well I’m not sure how to answer that. I had a knack for procuring what ever the General needed---special foods, booze, or what ever. But I suspect that due to my driving ability (drove him every where he wanted in a jeep) and perhaps with my size he felt more secure. I was sort’a like his personal Sgt. At Arms. It was a fun job though. I got to go, see, and do a lot of things most G.I. Joe’s could only dream about.”
What’d you do after the Army? “I went back to work for G.M. and retired after 33 years of service. Actually I retired several times but they kept calling me back. I had been a supervisor of the paint department for most of the last 13 years, then a consultant as they called me back to help set up shop for the new models.”
Was motorcycling always your hobby or past time enjoyment? I’ve pretty much always been into the biker life style, except for when I went fishing. During the 70’s I got into Bass fishing in a big way. I was very competitive and took lots of trophies and prizes. I stayed in the top 10 for quite a while.
How’d you get involved with the BOOZEFIGHTERS? In 1996 I met Gene Long and he invited me to the clubhouse for a meeting. I liked what I saw. Later I asked to prospect and `BIG JOHN’ took me under his wing and taught me the ropes.
I got voted in later and as time went on progressed all the way up to NATIONAL SGT. AT ARMS. One highlight that I’ll always remember is when I was part of a delegation that went to California and got it squared away for us to ware the GREEN & WHITE in that state. That was a proud day.
You got any advice for new members? Yeah---be true to your colors and your colors will be true to you! It’s one hell of a good organization with genuine brotherhood. A lot of people will envy you for being something special that they could never be.
-------------------- ----------- -------------------- ----------- -------------------- Post note: BFMC brothers & sisters be advised that `UNDERDOG’ is currently fighting the biggest battle of his life. It is for continued life. He will be receiving cancer treatment at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston for quite a while. Keep him in your prayers for a total recovery. JQ |
