JANUARY 2005 PROFILE
"SHANE"
Leon `SHANE’ Culberhouse was born 10-26-56 in Fort Worth, Texas. At 7 years of age he started his biker life by riding a Honda Trail 50. In 1969 he started motocross racing on a Ya. 125 Enduro. His first Harley was a brand new 1980 25 Anniversary Sportster. Shane’s career included being a Pro-Disjocky for 22 years and then a heavy haul truck driver. During the past 5 years he has driven for Albertsons. Also 5 years ago he became a CH 69 Boozefighter, and has served the past 4 years as a Road Captain. Shane has signed up with Kellogg, Brown & Root for a one year contract and will be stationed in Camp Andaconda, Iraq. JQ asked: Q…Shane why in the heck would you want to go and do a dangerous thing like that? Don’t you know you could get your butt blown off? A…Yeah and I don’t look forward to the risky part of it. But somebody’s got to do it. Q…I guess it pays pretty good? A…It does but I think ya earn every penny of it. You give up a lot you know. Lots of long hours of hot dusty driving and very little personal time. Q…And what can you do with your personal time anyway? You sure won’t be out bar-hopping or ride a bike down to the BFMC Clubhouse for a beer.
A…Beer is illegal there. No alcohol and no McDonald’s junk food for one solid year. Things we take for granted here are OUT! Maybe I’ll lose some weight in the process. Q…I still don’t get it. Why are you going to do a fool thing like that? Giving up the “GOOD LIFE” for a year, and maybe get hurt or something like – and for what??? A…Fact is – it’s just something I want to do. It’s my way of contributing. Q…Contributing to what? A…Well ya see my family has historically been involved in the military. For generations they have fought for our freedom and world democracy. I was too young for Viet Nam and generally too old for things after that. I never went into the military. Q…This definitely puts you into a war conflict situation. Sort’a like a sitting duck wouldn’t you say? A…I’m going to be sitting alright. On a piece of armor plate, and I’m going to have protective equipment all around me while I haul-ass. But for millions of people in Iraq…their chances for democracy, freedom, and the “GOOD LIFE” depend on our war effort to liberate their country. And part of making that possible is to get the materials and supplies thru. Q…Sounds admirable to me Shane. I admire your personal sacrifice. By the way…what will you be hauling? A…”FUEL!”
God bless you Shane and may the good Lord bring you back to us safely. JQ `HISTORY’
