Gypsy Tour 2003

Part II

Reno, America’s play land surrounded by snow capped mountains, forests with big trees and Lake Tahoe. I think it was there or somewhere on the way that ‘A-K’ from the west Texas panhandle made a classic statement.

He said, “You can hardly see a thing with all those mountains and trees in the way. But I’ll bet if you moved them it would look just as good as Lubbock or Amarillo.” Beauty is in the eye of the beholder???

A lot of fortunes were made or lost in the two days we were in the area. To my knowledge ‘Running Bear’s’ Lady ‘Jeannie’ was the only one that could claim a big wind fall. She gets off the airplane, rides to the hotel on the back of a bike, plunks $20 of quarters in to the first slot machine she comes to and WINS! She collected $1,000 right off the bat.

One Boozefighter asked another, “You going on to Auburn, California today?” Reply was, “Naw- I’m going sight seeing all the way around Lake Tahoe.  ” Response- “So what’s there to see out there?”  Beauty is in the eye of ---- aw well. If you’ve got to explain it- forget it.

In Harrah’s in south Lake Tahoe there was some little boy lost. Lots of folks were out looking for him. Everywhere we went people came around calling “KENO-KENO-KENO.”

Some of us learned the true value of journeying.  For example: Running Bear, Jeannie, Dancer, Driver, Wideglide and (me) History took a side trip to Geno, NV. It was a pretty ride over a mountain pass to the oldest bar in Nevada. It was established in 1853 as a “thirst parlor.” I got a pamphlet signed by the nice looking lady that ran the place. It said, “JQ no bar to far was here 6-5-03.” We had a blast and were glad we tasted (or should I say “drank”) a bit of history.

The Spring National Meeting for the Boozefighters was in Auburn, California June 6, 7 and 8. We made it via Truckee, California. While waiting in a long traffic line one of our group spotted a squad car up front. He rode his bike on the shoulder up to the cop and knocked on his window, then proceeded to have a conversation. Later, while sitting at a nostalgic bar, the group asked, “What were you talking to that policeman about?” “Oh, I just asked if he knew where any good bars were in this town.” “Don’t you think that was kind’ a risky?” “Well, he recommended this place, and it seems like a classic old joint.”
