It was a beautiful day in Hot and Humid Costa Rica.

I was excited because I knew that this was the day that the local Harley dealer was delivering to my hotel a 2006 Super Glide for me to explore the countryside with.  In typical local fashion the dealership was late delivering the bike.

After waiting an extra hour they arrive with only one helmet.  Costa Rican law requires that all riders wear a helmet. ( They don't care what kind.. novelty, bike, skateboard.  I actually say two policemen riding one bike with bicycle helmets on.. sorry I could not get to the camera quick enough to get a picture of the cop and his bitch cop buddy on one motorcycle).  Being the gentleman I am, I gave Turtle the only helmet ( plus I hate helmets).  The dealer said I should have no problems.

We set of for our adventure.  The ride down the coast is beautiful.  We went through several small villages.  We also went over some of the most run down, wore out bridges imaginable.  One lane bridges that the concrete was gone and only the steel beams were left,

you could see the river under you feet.  You dare not put your feet down because it could get caught between the supports.  Then cam the detour.  We had to travel a boulder covered road for about 5 miles.

It was still all fun.  We got past the detour and were on a paved road to Quespos, our final destination for lunch.  But ahead of us was a traffic jam.  There was a cop directing traffic.  When he saw me he immediately pointed at me and instructed me to pull over.

He said in Spanish and then in broken English (since he knew I had no clue what he said) "you need a helmet.. drivers license and passport please".  I handed the documents to him and he looked at them for a second.  He then said " Follow me".  He jumped into his truck, with my license and passport, and speed away.  I quickly followed thinking what is this going to cost me?  The cop was going down windy mountain roads at twice the speed limit and I was doing my best to stay wit him.  I needed that passport to get home.

He finally pulled over in front of the police station (the shack in the background of the picture), and started righting the ticket.  He turned and posed for the picture Turtle took.  Handed me the ticket, and said he was sorry for giving it to me but he had to.  I asked him were I could get a helmet so I would not get another ticket later.  He told me you can only get one ticket a day for no helmet and just keep the ticket.  The grand total for the ticket was $2000 colones ($4 dollars).  He would not take the money for it and said I could pay it at any bank.

The rest of the day was uneventful.. except for the gay cops riding bitch...
