THE BOOZEFIGHTERS NATIONAL
MUSEUM

After many
years of accumulating historic pictures and memorabilia it was concluded we need
a way to make that valuable material available for present and future
generations to appreciate and enjoy. A National Boozefighters Museum was a
must, and was recently constructed in the
BFMC Clubhouse, Fort Worth, Texas.
During our
last Fall National meeting in Fort Worth, I had to be out of town due to my Aunt
Margaret`s death. Fortunately `Dancer’ managed to pull things together and
formally made the Grand Opening happen. He was assisted by 84 years young Jack
Lilly, an Original from 1946, and Daniel `Thermo’ Statnekov an Honorary BF
Ambassador. Daniel brought the restored 1939 Crocker #103 that use to belong to
Jack before WW11.
Since then additional
final touches have been completed, like recessed lights in the five glass
display cabinets, carpeting, and many more
displays on the walls. We are finally up to speed and proudly sharing the rich
history of “THE ORIGINAL WILD ONES” with numerous weekly visitors. Every one
that has come through has been very complementary, usually stating that they had
learned a lot about history and the importance of our club`s roots.
The tour starts by
pointing out some old racing posters. One was signed by Jack Lilly in 1939. In
a wall display `Wino Willie’ shows off his tattoed arm; there`s a picture of
the 13 Rebels Motorcycle Club – the more or less parent club of the
Boozefighters; A group picture of the `Original’ BFMC; And it goes on and on.
In the glass display cabinets are numerous old
photos of the infamous July 4, 1947 Hollister, California event, plus the
original Life Magazine that propelled the Boozefighters into National and
International fame. Beside it is a copy of the Harpers Magazine story that was
used by Holleywood in making the movie “THE WILD ONE.” Of course there`s a
picture from that ventage production in the case too.
As you slowly browse
along you view J.D. Cameron (co-founder), brother Jim Cameron (still winning 1st
place in races), Jack Lilly`s contributions, `Red Dog’ Dahlgren`s jersey &
ridding stroker cap, Jim Hunter`s racing lagacy and how he broke a land speed
record in 1958.
Wino`s winter club shirt is on the wall,
Hunter`s Hall Of Fame trophy is on a
corner stand behind the glass box that
displays his California State Championship
trophy red jacket.
The last cabinet brings
our history into the late 80`s & 90`s rebirth of the club. It shows the
transition of the reins to Gary Rye, accompanied by Doug `Duke’ Barron, `Big
John’ Rogers, `Billy Jack’ Marney, and various others.
Pictured are our first
and only Natl Chaplain `Irish Ed’ Mahan in which can legally hitch ya up, plant
ya, and give you good food for thought in between; `Wide Glide’ Edwards showing
his plaque for “TEACHER OF THE YEAR”; and topping the counter is a picture of
US Senator Ben Knighthorse Campbell proudly wearing his Boozefighters Colors.

cant help from thinking – the original young folks that started this great
club way back in the
late 1940`s would appreciate their legacy being preserved and presented in this
treasured and revered way - - - and they probably would want us to know, “THOSE
WERN`T THE OLD ANCIENT DAYS. IT WAS THE MODERN INDUSTRIAL AGE AND THEY LIVED IT
GLORIOUSLY THAT WAY!”
